The widespread presence of olive in
Marches land, confirms that since the past centuries, this plant
had a primary role in the rural economy of the region. This volume
restores olive's historical value and at the same time carries it
forward to a widest European context of the new millennium.

In the Marches region olive cultivation praises a strong tradition
through the centuries; as a matter of fact, the Piceno area was very
well known for its good oil since the Roman age. After the fall of
Roman Empire, "de la Marchia" oil kept its fame thanks to
the activities of monks' communities and soon, it worthed more than
its competitors in all the markets of the world. Pilgrimages, an indirect
but important marketing mean, together with a legislation meant to
favor the olive culture, concurred to oil's further commercial outcome.
Several events had followed but from the Nineties Marches oil had
been relaunched as one of the most precious oil. (from the
chapter opening note)
